In 2023, 1 in 4 cars sold globally were electric, which amounted to 13.8 million vehicles.
Over the last decade or so, EVs have gone from novelties and social-political statements into mainstream consumer products. This leap has to do with the fact that EVs have become more practical, efficient, affordable, and appealing, positioning them as direct competitors to their fossil fuel counterparts. And actually, EVs are better in these aspects:
Lower cost of ownership: Electric vehicles are competitively priced, and many dealers offer attractive buyer incentives. On top of that, they’re much cheaper to run, insure, and maintain.
Lower environmental impact: EVs produce no emissions. While they may have a higher manufacturing carbon footprint, the vehicle offsets it in just a few years on the road.
Longer lifespans: Modern EV batteries can last up to 20 years. And since there are much fewer moving parts, electric drivetrains can easily outlive internal combustion systems. This also makes EVs less costly to maintain and more reliable.
No trips to the pump: EVs obviously run on electricity, which is relatively cheaper than filling up with fuel.
Higher performance: Most EV manufacturers have shifted from making small, dreary, slow vehicles in the name of saving battery range. Clever engineering and impressive developments in battery and materials science mean EVs no longer compromise the driving experience.
Bermuda on EVs
Bermuda, like many parts of the world, is warming up to electric vehicles. Even more good news is that the government is starting to ease the size restrictions on EVs.
In June 2024, the House of Assembly passed the Motor Car (Electric or Hybrid Private Motor Cars) Amendment Act 2024. The act allows Bermudians to drive larger EVs measuring 176 inches long and 72 inches wide. It’s only a one-inch increase in both dimensions, but it opens doors to 11 more EV models currently fitting the allowed size.
As of 2023, there were only 951 electric vehicles registered in Bermuda. That’s a far cry from the over 49,000 vehicles on the road. It’s a shame, too, since Bermuda is perfect for EVs.
Modern EVs will easily get you between 200 and 300 miles on a single charge. And once the batteries run flat, a fast charger will fill them up overnight. Admittedly, using a standard domestic outlet to charge an EV can take up to 24 hours, and it’s pretty cumbersome. But an 11.5 kW Type-II Fast Charger installed by Greenlight Energy does indeed fill those batteries up overnight.
Bermuda is only 21 square miles, so a single charge can last you weeks. Plus, with only 20 or so moving parts, EVs are mostly immune to the island’s corrosive environment.
Bermuda Is Gearing Up for an EV boom
Size restriction has been the number one hurdle for EV adoption in Bermuda. Fortunately, the government is slowly easing this restriction, one inch at a time (literally). That one-inch increase means that Bermudians can now drive a whole new class of EVs, such as the new 2025 all-electric Hyundai KONA, which Auto Solutions recently added to its showroom.
Also, Bermudians are starting to realize the cost savings of driving electric cars. It’s true that charging an electric car is much cheaper than filling up with gas, even in Bermuda, where electricity costs are through the roof.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, recently announced her support for electric vehicles as an answer to environmental conservation and a way to save money. She added that driving an electric car saved her $500 a month in gas and that recharging the vehicle had a very minimal impact on her power bill.
BELCO has a habit of raising electricity prices every now and then. Does that mean that, over time, it’ll get more costly to charge electric vehicles in Bermuda? Well, probably, but by negligible amounts. Even with rising electric prices, driving an EV will still be cheaper than driving a fossil fuel equivalent.
Let’s Embrace the EV Revolution
EVs are likely to take Bermuda by storm. Hats off to the car companies and dealers lobbying for more EV variety in Bermuda. And for bringing a broad range of modern EVs to the island.
